Vedic Dairy Traditions & The Holy Ghee
In Ayurveda, ghee is much more than a cooking fat. It is revered as Anupana (a vehicle that helps deliver medicine effectively) and Rasayana (a rejuvenating substance). Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe ghee as Ayushyam—a food believed to promote longevity, nourish Ojas (vitality), support memory, and lubricate the joints.
According to Vedic traditions, dairy farming was never viewed as a commercial enterprise. Cows were cherished as members of the family and honored as Gau Mata. Calves were always allowed to feed first, and only the remaining milk was used for human consumption. Ghee prepared from the milk of well-cared-for, contented cows is traditionally believed to carry a unique purity and positive energetic quality.
